The tête du cuvee of winemaker Jean MichelSt. Julien reigns supreme in his mind and this is reflected in the wine. It does not pretend to be a copy, it is a reflection of similar sensibilities in terms of ripeness and restraint, concentration and elegance, pleasure and stimulation. It is the wine where Jean Michel most expresses his Bordelais roots. St. Julien is his favorite commune of Bordeaux. This balance is what he seeks in Cuvee Morel. He left Bordeaux in the late 80's and it is as if he took this style with him. More Claret in form than California style. Masculine but perfumed and built for long aging. While the cuvee is consistently Merlot dominant the vineyards mountain proximity expresses a peppery spiciness maybe more indicative of Cabernet Franc. Certainly it is part of the blend but Merlot in Brda is also less fruit expressive and more savory, an impression we prefer ourselves. Functionally Cuvee Morel offers much of what one would seek in opening blue chip Bordeaux albeit without the status, or the cost. It deserves decanting this, awakens the deep minerality of the wine and allows some of the initial fruitiness to dissipate. Sweet tobacco, kirsch, leather, granite, pink peppercorn. Long and dynamic on the palate, truffled and salty and savory. An elite red wine for cellaring.
