Historically Khikhvi was one of the most important of the Kakhetian sorts. Due to low yields and susceptibility to disease it was practically forgotten. Luckily it was not. Most often it is used as a blending grape because it is rare to have enough of it to make a mono varietal wine. This is the first vintage where Beka opted to do so himself. It was a decision made because the wine felt complete to him. Indeed it lacks nothing. Subtle and bold it was bottled with a touch of residual sugar that refermented in the bottle giving a gentle fizz. These gentle bubbles, the little sweetness balance the firmness of the tannins and make this strong wine quite playful. Our favorite wines from Gotsa are always unexpected and his 2020 Kikhvi exemplifies this.
